Corrugated boxes vary in strength depending on their structure and materials. The key factors influencing weight capacity include the flute type, cardboard thickness, and overall box design.
Single-wall boxes are ideal for lighter items and everyday shipping needs. Double-wall boxes offer significantly more strength, making them suitable for heavier or bulkier products.
To accurately determine strength, manufacturers use the Edge Crush Test (ECT), which measures how much pressure a box can handle before collapsing. As a reference:
A single-wall box with an ECT rating of 35 typically supports up to 43 lbs (about 19.5 kg).
A double-wall box with an ECT of 51 can handle around 145 lbs (about 65.7 kg).
Choosing the right box ensures better protection during transit—and fewer returns due to damage.
When it comes to packaging, the terms "cardboard" and "corrugated" are often used interchangeably—but they refer to very different materials. Cardboard typically refers to a thick, single-layer paper stock, commonly used for packaging lightweight consumer goods, like cereal boxes or tissue cartons. In contrast, corrugated boxes are made from a three-layer structure: a fluted (wavy) inner layer is sandwiched between two flat linerboards. Two of the most commonly used coatings for corrugated packaging are Aqueous (AQ) and Varnish. AQ coating is a water-based, fast-drying option that’s environmentally friendly and well-suited for most applications. Varnish, while less eco-conscious, offers a stronger moisture barrier, making it ideal for products that need added protection.
Both coatings are available in matte and gloss finishes, allowing brands to choose the look and feel that best reflects their identity while maintaining the durability of corrugated packaging.
